FORDES, purchased in 1914, was the first purebred Shorthorn on the farm, a bull purchased from McCarthys at Madelia. During the '20s purebred cattle were coming on the scene and by the middle '30s & 40's Charles Ewald was seriously upgrading the Shorthorn herd. About this time he started to patronize the "biggies" of the industry. The first imported Shorthorns from Scotland started to come to FAIR ACRES in the early '40s. This continued until the mid 1960s - including several bulls (Calrossie Tradewind) and as many as 25 imported females on the farm. The first Polled Shorthorn, a bull, Remitall Clipper King, was purchased from the Remitall Cattle Co., Olds, Alberta, Canada in the mid '60s. He was also the first polled bull that they had sold; they being horned breeders and was also making the change. With the step-up of the quality program, show-ring exposure was also intensified. This was primarily my project and it included fairs, national shows and sales. The International Livestock Show after Thanksgiving was the highlight of the year. During this period the cattle were smaller, blockier, shorter legged and not changing greatly until the late 60's. Then it was "bigger is better". Both Charles Ewald (1963) and Lyle Ewald (1997) were name "Builder of the Breed". The first Polled Herefords came in 1970. "Miss Soup", from Royal Oaks Ranch, Rochester, Minnesota, (at that time one of the top Polled Hereford breeders in the state), was the first at FAIR ACRES. Some of the influence to go into Polled Herefords came from Louada and Remitall; old Shorthorn firms turned Polled Hereford. The most recent addition to Fair Acres was in 1998 with the purchase of a purebred Angus heifer in Argentina, then subsequent purchases in the United States. |
